About The Role

 
The Production & Engineering Director is responsible for leading the manufacturing and engineering functions, and oversees all manufacturing and engineering processes across our sites. The role will lead process development projects, establishing appropriate technical knowledge and team competence.

Responsible for providing leadership, and management to the production and engineering teams.
 
Responsible for strategy, development & delivery including specification and compliance of products, leading to improvements in our production facility, and ensuring that Health, Safety and Environmental requirements are adhered to.
 
The role has full budgetary responsibility for the department.

An important part of this role is to build and develop a team, and to lead the engineering and production elements of growth projects such as international expansion.
 
 
Main Responsibilities for the Production & Engineering Director will sit within the following key areas:
 
 
Management
 
  • Responsible for and leading the Manufacturing and engineering teams consisting of; Production Mgmt, Production Engineering, Production Assembly and Production Quality. Engineering functions include the Drawing Office and R&D.
  • Responsible and accountable for the entirety of the Production and Engineering activities, and procedures. Driving a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the following: ISO9001, ISO14001 & ISO45001 Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental policies and standards.
  • Implement Systems delivering a Production and Engineering system that fulfils all stakeholder requirements including Safety, Quality, Design for Build, Manufacturability, and our internal and external customer expectations.
  • Identify and deploy the technical skill sets, resource levels and systems to deliver existing and new products, including engagement with external resources as required.
  • Drive functional excellence and maximise the immediate efficiency and profitability of the Production and Engineering teams.
  • Strategy and Development
 
People Management
 
  • Leads and ensures the delivery of the People Strategy within area of accountability, including overall development of the Production and Engineering team.
  • Manage and lead the team, ensuring effective workforce capability planning maximises current and strategic efficiency.
  • Motivate and coach the team to operational success.
  • Provide technical expertise to the team.
 
Production and Engineering Quality
 
  • Leads the design, implementation, proofing and maintenance of Production &  Engineering systems to deliver product on time, & to quality and cost requirements. Right first time, every time.
  • Ensure appropriate Quality tools & techniques are utilised at the correct times to ensure risk of defects is minimised (including but not limited to DFMEA, PFMEA, control plans, process flow charts, capability studies & Gage (Repeatability and Reproducibility) R&R.
  • Drive validation plans to ensure robust and comprehensive technical solutions.
  • Develop, implement, and manage key performance indicators (KPIs) for each area of responsibility.
  • Lead and drive Continuous Improvement activities through to completion.
  • Communicate and roll out improved/new processes and procedures to wider business and external stakeholders.
 
Strategy

  • Determine and develop the strategic direction of the Production & Engineering team, setting the plan for resources, (people, products, processes), and production relationships with the goal of maximising efficiency and profitability.
  • Develop and maintain project plans and budget profiles to ensure delivery of milestones to agreed cost targets and timescales.
  • Identify and justify capital equipment investments to deliver efficiencies within the Production and Engineering environment.

New Product Implementation
 
  • Contributes in driving the NPI process, with smooth integration across the Production and Engineering functions. Accountable for process development, new product estimates, Jig and tool design, fabrication, quotes, first article development, configuration change management, build process.
 
Financial Budget & Control
 
  • Hold responsibility for capital management & delivery to budget.
  • Responsible for departmental budget target setting / forecasting
  • Responsible for delivering strong ROI’s on any Capex & Resource (people, products, processes) improvements.
  • Increasing YoY profitability of Production and Engineering.
 
 
Relationship Management
 
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance of Production and Engineering.
  • Work collaboratively, negotiate, and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the Production & Engineering strategy.
  • Stay current and up to date on any technology changes that may affect production, design and development, and advise others of any impact.
  • Contribute to new business initiatives and projects, and review and communicate the impact on Production and Engineering activities.
  • Collaborate with equipment manufacturers to develop proprietary technology.
 
Qualifications & Experience Required for the Production & Engineering Director
 
Essential
 
  • Relevant degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and/or proven experience in managing complex manufacturing operations in the UK and/or Overseas.
  • Experience with leading manufacturing technology.
  • Leading and demanding a Health & Safety culture, driving and creating an environment where good practice becomes culturally embedded, and overall compliance is delivered.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in the successful deployment and implementation of lean manufacturing techniques, including six sigma.
  • Experience of designing and manufacturing construction/rotating or water industry equipment.
  • Inspirational leader and developer of high performing teams on a global scale. Experienced coach and mentor with outstanding people skills, able to connect and collaborate within your team and across the organisation.
  • Extraordinary relationship builder with demonstrable experience in building professional and profitable relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable background in setting clear objectives aligned to business goals and interconnecting all employees and departmental functions. Ensure the customer experience maximises quality and service. 
  • Excellent IT & analytical skills enabling the development of effective KPI metrics.
  • A leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen and offer sound feedback.
  • An ability to provide a Production and Engineering vision for the business and the wider team, and to adapt and be decisive in a rapid pace environment.
  • Intimate understanding of UKCA and CE requirements and their successful implementation.
 
Preferred
 
  • Experience of CI methodology and tools.
  • Experience of DMAIC methodology.
